Stephen Beardsell

Biography

In 2001, I graduated from Sunderland University with a Batchelor of Art degree in Glass and Ceramics. After this, I achieved a Master of Art Degree in Glass.

Currently, I work in the glass department at the University of Sunderland and also as a designer and maker for the in-house hot glass team in the National Glass Centre, Sunderland.

I have been involved in sculpture for the past fifteen years. My aims are to create mixed media sculptures that sit comfortably in the natural environment.

My main influences come from observations in nature, such as seeds and plants. I am interested in how they grow, evolve and exist.

I build my glass sculptures in the National Glass Centre using many different techniques such as hot glass, kiln glass and cold glass.

Recently, I have been creating glass moulds by carving negative forms into graphite. Sculptures are created from these glass elements. In the future, I aim to use his technique to create larger outdoor sculptures.
